Behind the scenes there are a number of people who are very influential in SA art. No, not the artists, the others. We don't know a lot about South African artists but we know even less about other people involved in the arts.
Who are more than just artists?
A number of minor artists has had a huge influence on the history of South African art. Not as artists but as initiators, administrators, teachers, benefactors and agitators. They are listed as artists in this directory, but here we also acknowledge their other contributions to the arts in South Africa.
Who are the writers?
Even though not many books have been published people still write about South African art. Especially academic writing is easily forgotten when it appears in journals with a minute subscription. Who are the people that care enough about South African art to put pen to paper?
Not everybody that writes about art are artists. A number of them never studied art formally and approach their subject matter with the typical enthusiasm of an amateur.
